Focus right now is on Arizona where polls show 59{2b4a1a3f3bbc9c5a43771f34362679a3afcf9df24c0d9f4fe2fa80a69d802033} favor marijuana legalization.

On Aug. 29 the DOJ announced it wont interfere with Colorado and Washington’s implementation of voter-approved laws and the establishment of state-regulated marijuana production and retail sales. Federal prosecutors were also advised not to target businesses and individuals complying with state laws regulating and taxing marijuana.

This decision has opened the door for many states with a wait and see attitude to move forward.

It is  time for a federal policy shift and marijuana prohibition is clearly failing just as alcohol prohibition did. The FBI announced over 750,000 marijuana related arrests were made last year, most for simple possession. Most voters believe the money and time involved in this could be better spent elsewhere.

MPP will work with local advocates and leaders in Arizona to get an initiative on the ballot in 2016. The initiative would tax and regulate marijuana and allow adults 21 years of age or older to purchase it in state-licensed stores.

“A public policy polling survey in January showed that 59 percent of Arizonans would vote for an initiative that regulated marijuana in a manner similar to alcohol and allowed it to be sold to adults 21 years of age or older in state-licensed stores.”
