Following the national trend, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn just signed the newest state to go legit on cannabis. This makes Illinois the 20th state to legalize this harmless and therapeutic plant. The restrictions on usage are more severe, however, it is a start in the right direction. Enough Americans have been arrested and we need to stop wasting tax dollars on archaic drug laws.
The measure takes effect January 1st and establishes a four-year pilot program for 60 state-run dispensaries and 22 “cultivation centers.” All of which will be under BIG Brother 24-hour surveillance, where the medicinal plants will be grown, the Chicago Tribune reported. No patient can grow his own which increases the price and they will probably not get close to the high quality level of patient growers in other legal states. The increased acceptance of medicinal cannabis can be a boon for all the varieties of fertilizers and new technology such as LED Grow Lights.
Under the new medicinal law, doctors will be able to prescribe cannabis for more than 30 specific medical illnesses such as cancer, AIDS, Alzheimer’s disease, Crohn’s disease and multiple sclerosis, according to CBS Chicago. This is fantastic for many patients seeking relief without all the complications of pharmaceuticals.
”It’s very important we do whatever we can to ease their pain,” Quinn said at a new medical facility at the University of Chicago. ”It’s a very well-drafted bill.”
A true statement and hopefully time will ease the distribution methods and other restrictions. The new law sets prescription limits at no more than 2.5 ounces over a two week period. The patient and the doctor must also have an established and ongoing medical relationship.
Unlike many other states where medical marijuana is legalized, Illinois won’t allow users to grow cannabis in their homes. We all know the government can’t grow high quality medicine so only time will tell how that policy works out. Like Ronald Reagan said “The government can’t do anything better or more efficiently than the public.”
